  Religion's Contribution To Spain's Tourism

Tourism in Spain is a major player to the tourism industry in the country. There are a lot of religious aspects that attract tourists every year. There are some areas in the world that are considered as holy. These regions are related to some events that probably took place in the places in the past. Spain prides itself as having some of the places considered most holy after Jerusalem and Vatican City Rome. These places are highly visited by religious fanatics every year. These areas therefore contribute majorly to the tourism sector.

There are the cathedrals that were used in the past during the medieval era that are still standing to date. Maintenance of the monuments is done regularly so as to pass down the legacy to the future generations. Islam architecture includes mosques. The Moorish settlers were highly Muslim and the monuments that they left still stand to date. There is the famous fortress that was used to protect the Muslim territory from Christian invasion.

The Moorish people controlled Spain for 300 years. It is therefore kind of a wonder that the main religion today is Catholicism although there is no specific religion in the country. There are Jews especially in the areas of Cordoba, Seville, Barcelona and Madrid. Catholics, protestants, Jews and Muslims have been under a lot of conflict for many years. There is a signed concordant between Spain and the Vatican making Catholicism the states religion.

Spanish religion lays a lot of importance to the suffering that Jesus Christ went through during the period that he was crucified. This important event in the Christian history is celebrated during the Easter period. Spanish people celebrate Easter in a special way. The last week of lent sees a lot of street processions those are held every year. There are regions in Spain that are popular because of this procession. There are features within the procession that are similar in most areas but there are some bits of uniqueness from one place to the other.

These processions include hundreds of people who walk barefoot singing solemn songs while others are chained in shackles while their faces are covered with hoods. To show their empathy with Christ, they bear same burdens as Jesus did during the period when he was crucified.

Most buildings are constructed to resemble the church. The pastries and cakes are also created with a cross to show how much the Spanish people appreciate religion. All these places and areas with a religious inclination play a major role in attracting visitors to Spain thus making a major contribution.
