Transformation From Ancient to Modern for Benidorm

Benidorm was just a fishing village for many to idle their time away until 1950s. It became a popular holiday resort when tourists enjoyed Benidorm’s sunshine, soft sandy beaches and warm waters.

Its northern region of the fabulous Costa Blanca makes it very strategic for many Europeans to enjoy a fantastic summer holiday at the seaside. It is not surprising for a record of over 4 million visitors to Benidorm every year.

Development

From a simple idyllic fishing village, Benidorm enjoyed many ancient ships porting at its bay. There have been numerous ship fragments from the Roman era. The Arabs and Moors came to transform Benidorm more prominently as an important fishing village.

The Christian Re-conquest came and continued to build up Benidorm although Berber pirates attacked the town quite frequently until the castles were destroyed and only several locals dared stay on as fishermen.

Benidorm flourished with the irrigation drain set up in 1666 to produce better and more vegetation. The San Jaime Parish Church was reconstructed in 1740 with a growing population.

Transformation

Benidorm experienced a great transformation through an agricultural development. Fishing remained the primary activity of the town with tuna as the main economy for Benidorm. The town’s population spiked until 1920 when a phylloxera outbreak hit the then thriving grape industry.  In the early 1950s, fish catches in Benidorm decreased to impact the town’s economy adversely until the railway was constructed.

The tourism industry bloomed in Benidorm as tourists flooded its coastlines to revive the town’s ailing economy. The town further blossomed with Alicante airport opening in 1967 as the town’s population grew until its 50,000 residents today and more in the summer.

Hence, Benidorm is considered a popular holiday resort today with two amazing beaches, lots of pubs, bars, clubs and discos. Families would love Benidorm for its theme parks and wholesome entertaining activities that are suitable for the whole family. Sun lovers would love their tan through the myriad of water sports such as scuba diving, sailing, wind surfing and jet-skiing.

Natural beauty

Benidorm is also a natural beauty with the plethora of beautiful landscapes around such as unique rock formations. Many tourists would have a gala time discovering many of these delightful spots with a stroll or a drive.

There are plenty of opportunities to take great photos and etch wonderful memories at Benidorm.

Tourists would be able to soak in the sun and warm waters to relax themselves even if it is just for the weekend.
